Top 3 Most Bizarre Superstitions

Superstitions are a part of our lives. Whether we admit & realise this or not!! Superstitions do exist in every single society around the world, having their hold on the human mind & its way of thinking.

A research, conducted by The Betway Group(See Source below), revealed that over ten million people won't walk under ladders for fear that it will bring them bad luck, while a further nine million people believe that breaking a mirror will bring seven years bad fortune.

Some superstitions are more gross & visible; Others more subtle, like crossing your fingers. But to say  'Oh, I am not superstitious', might be an under-statement.

In this blogpost, I would like to share the top 3 bizarre superstitions during my travel around India:

1. Bury a packet of Milk in your Garden & it will stop raining:

A friend of mine, after 4 consistent days of downpour in Mumbai, buried a packet of milk in our garden so it would stop raining. AND, it surely did not rain for the next 2-3 days, coincidence / superstition. Rain Gods alone cane answer this!!

2. Keep snake skin in your locker, it will bring wealth:

I was in Gondia, Maharashtra once, when the host's wife came running from the garden, terrified, because she has seen a  snake. Her husband went looking in the garden & came back with a big smile on his face because he had found the snake's skin. He immediately put away the snake's skin in his safe locker saying this would bring him good luck & wealth.

Well, Snake in your locker, lets ask Goddess Laxmi if this is what she wants for company!

3. When hit by a Heat-Wave, wave a stick broom around the sick person to ward off the ill-effects of a heat-stroke:

Once in the hot month of May, when the temperature was 490 Celsius in Wardha, Maharashtra, a friend was hit by the heat-wave. And much to my surprise & my sick friend shock, the local host insisted on waving a stick broom all around her body to ward off the effects of the heat-wave.
Most certainly this 'bizarre' superstition superseded the mild shock caused by heat-exhaustion.
There must surely be some 'scientific' reason behind this, my friend would do anything to find out!!

My Spiritual Guide, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has always led me to understand the 'reason' behind our rituals, concepts & practices.

Taking this trend forward, the Next Blog Post 'Decoding Superstitions' will list out some common Superstitions & a sharing about the probable logic / reason behind them.

Till then, Touch Wood & hope everything is fine with you & Cross Fingers wishing for the very best.

  2. Jgd...the topic is smthg different didi. But honestly,i hv never heard of any of the 3 methods, though I come across many other kind. Few of the methods really hv worked at times(dont know logic behind it). Hence superstition is a topic im really doubtful of.

    1. Thanks Rachayita,
Superstitions are about belief & are not "necessarily" supported by any reason / truth.
I have deliberately chosen 3 superstitions that I have encountered during my personal travel but are not 'known' commonly.
This blog is for sharing encounters : both bizarre & amusing :)

  3. The milk one sounds so funny! I think it's the person belief and faith in whatever they are doing that makes it happen
